It is important that a casual employee be able to switch to full-time or part-time employment at any time, if the employer offers it and the worker consents. Some Modern Awards contain occasional conversion clauses in which casual employees can apply to be converted into permanent employment. Although there is no definition of „casual“ in Australian labour law, it is generally accepted that it is someone who works as required by his employer. This means that casual workers do not guarantee regular work schedules or current employment and are maintained as needed. Check your own collective agreement to see how schedules are checked. Improved incomes would also have an impact on the attractiveness of work in this sector. About 17% of employees have a part-time contract. Wholesale trade is the only pam sector where the proportion of part-time workers is lower than the national average. In contrast, in retail trade and hotels and restaurants, the proportion of part-time workers is close to 40%. In the convenience services and in the private security sector, about 25% of workers work part-time. In practice, half of those who work part-time in the PAM sectors do so out of necessity because there is no full-time job.

The reason given is that, in the service sector, labour needs vary according to the time of day and the day of the week and therefore more part-time workers need to be recruited. Random overtime offered on a short-term basis can be difficult for employees to accept, as they have planned their own and possibly their family`s life based on the well-known work plan. For the right to overtime to benefit all parties involved, employers should do more to plan workstations. Plans for the organisation of working time in collective agreements offer the possibility of placing jobs at times when demand is greatest, taking due account of workers` right to overtime. Currently, overtime must be offered uniformly to all part-time workers. This is not affected, for example, by the duration of an employment contract. This is one of the reasons why some long-time employees in the service sector want a full-time job, but never get it throughout their careers. .
